The venue moves to the outskirts of Raleigh, just bordering Garner. It seems like whereever you are in Raleigh, there is a resident hawk in the area. In my new location, it’s not a Buteo jamaicensis (Red-tail) but a Accipiter cooperii (Cooper’s Hawk). I’ve heard and seen 2 of them in the air, but only yesterday did I get the chance to hawkaratzzi one of them.
As I was leaving for home, I saw 4 large crows squawking and flying about a tree. There was a 5th bird, not black like a crow and much bigger than a Mockingbird. This guy was fast and more maneuverable than their Red-tailed cousin. It was a Cooper’s Hawk.
I still have to find their nest which isn’t going to be as easy as the Red-tails’ in Downtown. Oh, well. Adventure! Enjoy!
