I walked around the Capitol early today but didn’t see any of the Red-tails. However, I noticed that the Red-tails nest on the Church’s steeple looked somewhat puffier compared to a few days ago.
While I have not seen them at work, someone has been busy at the nest. My guess is that Mama and Papa have been hard at work in the last 2 days, getting a early start refurbishing the nest. The nest certainly did not look this way last week or even this past Monday, 12/31/2012.
Maybe this is the hawk’s new years resolution? Start early and work hard.

Backside, facing the Church’s parking lot
Note that these are fresh nesting material.
We can only guess that our Red-tailed friends are indeed, getting ready for another nesting season.
Last year, they started in late January. This year, they started in early January. Why the early start?
I asked our resident expert, John Gerwin regarding this and he mentioned that birds often refurbish the nest throughout the year.
Then again maybe they know something we don’t?
