April 8 – yes, it’s all in the same day 🙂
At noon, there wasn’t as much activity as what happened with Blynken and Mama, but nevertheless, there were Raptors flying all around downtown. One Red-tail (I think this was Mama) went into SuperMoM position (wings folded straight back) and dove from a really high altitude (MUCH higher than the Wells Fargo building). All of these are very tight crops as she was really far out.
Mama can afford to look elsewhere even when diving straight down. 🙂
During this dive sequence, Mama opened her wings to put on the brakes and then folded them back and continued diving. Not once did she have to flap. She landed on top of the new Museum of Natural Sciences building.
While that was fantastic, there were other raptors in the air. Air Blynken was ever-present
but there was another Red-tail, another adult. At first I thought it was Papa, but Papa was in the nest and Mama just did her SuperMa dive… so who was the 3rd Red-tail?
Mama went to investigate…
This adult RTH had his/her talons down. My colleague mentioned that this might have been a courtship ritual where they would lock talons. Little did the intruder know, Mama is already mated for life to Papa. 🙂
Mama flew back to the nest and Papa took off…
It was Papa’s turn to fly the intruder or would-be suitor out of town.

Lots happening in the skies and around the Capitol in downtown Raleigh!
