Hawk VS Food

Aug 28

Sightings of the Red-tails have been few and far in between and today, as I drove in, I saw one hawk at the SECU building.  Before I could even walk to the SECU building, it took off on a steep dive.   A minute later, Mama emerged with food in hand.

Throughout the years, I’ve seen both Mama and Papa eat their prey in small itty-bitty bites,

but today was different. Mama was on a “Hawk VS Food” challenge.

Can she swallow this in ONE bite?

OMG! She did! Yeah!

The bulge on her chest means she just ate…

But Mama wasn’t done.  She flew back to the tree where she caught the squirrel earlier.  But the squirrels were aware of her presence and scampered.

Didn’t see Papa today, probably overslept :).

  1. Papa hawk staring you down on the last two shots. Like owls, do they pass the bones and tails, beaks, whatever in their droppings?? Can’t think of much nutritional value in a squirrels hairy tail.
